[MERIONES HURRIANAE]

Population : Unknown
Habitat : Uncultivated semi arid and
arid lands with strong soil. Jirds live in close
colonies to each other and have two holes to enter their
colonies, one as an emergency exit that is camouflaged
from the top in case of a predator entering their
colony.
Most Active : Early morning and
evening till 11pm
Size : 10-15 cm with tail
The Indian desert Jird is less aggressive than wild
Jirbils and has the ability to store water and
release the water within itself when needed. Very early
morning is best to see this unique animal at the Jalore
wildlife sanctuary. |

Habitat : Usually dry deciduous
savanna, open scrub forest.
Most Active : Early morning and
evening till 11pm
Size : 130-150cm at shoulders, weight
170-250kg
Diet : Seeds, shrubs, thorn bushes.
Males
are steely blue gray and females are sandy brown. The Blue Bull is the largest
antelope found in India. Males are solitary while females forage in groups up to
12 in size. |

COBRA [NAJA OXIANA]*
Size : 1371-1625 mm
Most Active : Early evening throughout the
night.
Habitat : The Cobras are eclectic in habitat
absent in arid deserts and in the hills above 1800m.
Food : At our campsite we have witnessed this
species eat Jirds as well as a gazelle when no other
food is available.
The
photograph was taken after this black Cobra had eaten a
bird. At this time man can approach the black Cobra as
it's movements are slow while digesting it's prey. |

INDIAN GAZELLE [GAZELLA BENNETTII] Family : Bovidae
Population : 100,000 approx (South
Asia). Herds of 3-20 lead by a matriarch female
Habitat : Arid scrub forest and desert
regions.
Most Active : During daylight
Size : At shoulders 65cm, weight 22-24
kg
The Indian Gazelle can store water collected from dew
and vegetation and survive without water for many days. The Indian Gazelle is
terrestrial and stays usually within a 100 sq. km area from where it was born. A
graceful animal best seen in the early morning and late afternoon at True Luxury
Tours Jalore wildlife sanctuary. |

The desert mongoose is a sub-species of the grey mongoose
and is reddish in colour. |

Habitat : Evergreen, dry and wet deciduous forests,
scrub forest, rocky outcrops with grassy areas.
Most Active : At night
Size : Body length 1.85-2.15m, weight 39-67kg
The Indian Panther prey upon
deer, hare, dogs, lizard, rats and birds. The Panther is terestrial
and travels up to 80km in one night. In The Jalore Wildlife Sanctuary
the Panther lives in granite rock shelters and small caves on the
side of cliffs near to water holes and grassy areas. |
